Hair ageing: What you can do to delay it

We detail clinical treatments as well as at-home care for hair ageing

Your hair, like any other part of your body, is susceptible to change as it ages. Hair ageing is characterised by natural wear, tear, and degeneration. The most obvious and widely acknowledged sign of hair ageing is grey hair, which is due to the loss of pigment cells and melanin. Additionally, the texture of your hair also changes—it becomes finer, dryer, and coarser. Hair follicles become thinner and some may eventually stop producing hair. As hair loses density, there may be bald spots on the scalp. This is supplemented by hair loss, which is a common hair ageing problem. Finally, hair growth slows down and hair length becomes shorter.

What can you do?

Fortunately, we know enough about the hair ageing process to slow it down. Of course, you cannot put a stop to a natural function as it takes its course but there are several ways to prolong the quality of your hair and also repair it, once the degenerative process starts.

Professional treatments

Provita treatment

What is it?

At Biolite, we offer the Provita Hair Rejuvenation and Hair Loss Treatment, which is a great in-clinic treatment for hair ageing. Combining the benefits of Mesotherapy, LED light therapy, and growth factors, we formulated the Placenta treatment. In this treatment, we use proteins, vitamins, and growth factors to strengthen hair and make them shinier and more voluminous. It also helps to activate the scalp and ensure hair growth, and is suitable for all hair types.

How does it work?

During the consultation, the quality of your hair is determined. An assessment and follow-up routine is provided to you by the practitioner. It is important to remember that the treatment works on every patient differently, depending on their environmental, genetic, and hormonal factors. Personal factors, too, like stress and diet, affect the results. The whole progress will be recorded for you, which will include images of your scalp and hair prior, during, and after the treatment. It is recommended to wash your scalp before the treatment. The procedure involves four steps:

 1. A high frequency comb is run through your scalp to improve blood circulation.
 2. A protein serum is applied using Dermapen Mesotherapy, which is a treatment involving a fractional needling device to deliver solutions below the surface of the skin. This ensures better absorption of the serum and causes less epidermal damage than traditional Mesotherapy.
 3. A low level laser is used to activate follicles that promote new hair growth. The light from different directions helps to target different areas, and is effective in post-operative transplant surgery and to reverse the damages of chemical treatments. It also increases hair strength and elasticity.
 4. Finally, the scalp is massaged to ensure the serum is thoroughly absorbed. The entire treatment takes a total of 45 minutes.

At-home methods

Healthy diet
healthy diet for healthy hair

How you look depends a good deal on your diet. These are the key nutrients to stimulate growth and prevent hair from falling out.

 • Protein: Hair follicles are largely made of a protein called keratin. Eating a protein-rich diet will prevent hair loss and stimulate growth. Meat, eggs, fish, legumes, and dairy are excellent sources of protein.
 • Iron: The second most important nutrient for hair is iron. The best plant source for iron would be green leafy vegetables, which contain key vitamins and nutrients including folate and vitamins. They help maintain hair quality.
 • Biotin: Biotin keeps hair thick and shiny. Foods like eggs, nuts, bananas, and avocados help to slow down the process of hair ageing.
 • Omega-3 fatty acids: This fatty acid promotes hair growth and controls pigmentation. Fish, nuts, and avocados are great sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
 • Others: Vitamins and antioxidants also maintain hair quality and slow down ageing. Berries, citrus fruits, and vegetables provide the required nutrients. Nutrient uptake can also be enhanced through supplements. Speak to your doctor about supplements and multivitamins that you can include to promote healthy hair.
Hair care routine

As you age, hair becomes course, dry, and thin. They also fall out easily. Excessive hair washing can add more stress causing more problems. Opt for mild shampoos and allow your scalp to produce sebum and keep your hair from becoming too dry. It is also very important to understand your hair type—dry, combination, or oily—and buy products accordingly. Nourish your hair and scalp with oils, conditioners, and masks when needed. Finally, it is important to cut your hair every once in a while, else you may experience breakage and split ends. Proper nurturing and maintenance can go a long way when thinking about hair ageing. To book a consultation with us, click here.FEATURED IMAGE COURTESY: Designed by Freepik
