Enlarged pores are caused by excess oil production and are tiny divots in the skin’s surface that contain the opening to the oil glands that carry oil to the surface of the skin. This oil, also known as sebum, is naturally produced by the skin and is necessary to keep the skin moisturized. When there is too much sebum, however, the pores enlarge and the skin’s surface can become too oily. Enlarged pores are most often caused by an imbalance in the skin where excess sebum is produced to keep the skin moisturized. This can happen due to changes in the weather, harsh skin products that dry out the skin and health conditions, but it is most often simply a cause of genetics and a predisposition toward oily skin.
While enlarged pores are not necessarily unhealthy or a cause for serious concern, they can be noticeable, and for most, undesirable. Large pores can make the skin’s surface appear uneven and bumpy, especially under makeup. For those who have enlarged pores and especially for those who have naturally oily skin, it can be difficult to reduce pore size, however, there are things you can do to reduce them. Having a good skincare routine with products that control oil and facial treatments, such as dermabrasion & lasers which, are effective methods for reducing enlarged pores.
